Refreshing the Brain

I’ve been marking assignments solidly all this week, when I would much rather have been working on The Outcast Chronicles (the trilogy I have to hand in early next year). Twelve hour days of marking leaves me feeling mentally drained. So what do I do to revive myself?

I feed my brain with beautiful images. I have books on art. Here’s some of my faves:

The pre raphaelites. I have several books on them and when the TV series came out I looked forward to every episode. It didn’t worry me that they played around with the timeline. I felt they’d captured the essence of the group. (Having lived as a passionate young artist with a group of artists the TV  series made me laugh). Such romantics and the women are so beautiful …

John Willian Waterhouse,  Lady of Shallot

John Everett Millais, Mariana.

Leyendecker’s art. You know how you see a piece of art by someone and it stays with you and it might be years later before you discover that artist again and work out who he is and where he fits into the  world of art? Maybe you don’t if you’ve grown up with the internet. But before that, when I was a child, I’d glimpse an image somewhere and it might be years before I was able to put a name to the artwork. My husband bought me a book on Leyendecker.  So stylish.

And one more because I can’t resist …

Of course I have more favourite artists. I’m a visual person. If I go to the art gallery, I come out  feeling like I’m walking on air. Other writers I know play music. Many will have a selection of music that they play specifically when writing a certain book or a series. I collect images which float around in my mind as I write.

Are you a music person or an image person?

King Rolen’s Kin Book 4

I’d like to thank all the people who’ve contacted me about the fourth book in the Chronicles of King Rolen’s Kin. A writer spends years developing the world of a series. They dedicate themselves to the characters. They devote themselves to the plot. And then they send their books out into the world, hoping someone will get as much of a buzz from the stories as they do.

It makes my day, when readers come looking for KRK 4.

The good news is that I have heaps of ideas for another three books. The bad news for KRK readers is that I have to hand in a new fantasy series – The Outcast Chronicles –  before I can tackle the new KRK books.

But once I have handed the new series in to my publisher, I’ll be free to take a journey to Rolencia and find out what happens to Byren, Piro and Fyn.

Let’s hear it for Terry Pratchett!

I just read that Terry Pratchett has won a World Fantasy Lifetime Achievement award for outstanding service to the fantasy field. (His co-winners were Brian Lumley and Peter Straub).  Here’s the link.

I’ve done it!

I’ve bought something just for me, something completely self indulgent, something beautiful. I’ve never done this before.

I’ve bought Lord Leighton’s Flaming June (1896)

I saw it years ago and loved it. Forgot what it was called, searched catalogues for it and finally rediscovered it. Now I have it hanging on my wall. It is a strange feeling. I get a little thrill every time I look at it.

Who wants a little boredom????

Okay, who wants a little boredom?

I’d like there to be days when nothing unexpected happens. No more excitement, no cars breaking down, no hot water systems blowing up and definitely no children being mugged and bashed (he’s OK).

I’d like to be able to get up, do all the stuff that needs to be done to run a large family and meet my obligations, and then have the mental space to let story ideas brew.

I think you need a bit of boredom for creativity to happen. Sure, you input stimulus, you read true-life accounts, read history, listen to people talk etc, but there has to be this quiet time, when it all just simmers away in your brain making connections and suddenly, out of the blue (or gold) there’s this idea that just demands to be written.

So, yeah, I want a little boredom. I think it’s good for creativity. Remember when you were a kid and your summer holiday stretched for ever?

I want that feeling back again.

I’m Baaaack …

From the World SF Con held in Melbourne over the weekend. Before that I did a ROR (critiuqing 3 books) and before that I did a week or more marking. Brain is a little fried, so this will be a short post.

First my Kaffeeklatsch was held first thing on Thursday morning. A big thank you to Michelle from Colorado who saw my (Please won’t someone come to my Kaffeeklatsch? I don’t want to be sitting at a table all alone – post on the Mad Genius Club blog). Also a big thank you to Elini from the Paranormal Romance girls who heeded my cry for help. We ended up having a great chat while I was waiting for the airport bus on the last day I was in Melbourne. And thank you to Kathryn from Galaxy Books who dropped by with her purple camera. We had a great chat about Buffy. I mean, there is so much to talk about with that show.

Then Sarah (who I will always think of as Callisto Shampoo because of her tag name) grabbed me and I sat in on her KaffeeKlatsch, met some lovely ladies. Satima is always a sharp eyed but sweet. And the two ladies from the US, Judith and her companion (sorry brain really is fried, can’t remember your name). We got onto the subject of women in SF and there was no stopping us. Rosie was also there but I can’t remember where.

So a big thank you to you all. Now I really must catch up with my emails. More later!

Reading as Mental Gymnastics!

Kate over at the Mad Genius Club Shared Blog accused me of being irrepressibly happy (in the nicest possible way). I just can’t help it. Don’t worry, I also have a very black sense of humour. It is how I maintain an even keel.

A scientific study has proven that thinking positive thoughts, eating fruit and veg and reading turn out be the best way to avoide dementia. (See full article here).

They followed 1,433 pensioners for 7 years and studied their habits. And they found:

‘Those with lower reading scores were 18 per cent more likely to develop “mild cognitive impairment or dementia” – the former widely seen as a forerunner of the latter.

Those with depression were 10 per cent more likely to develop it; while those who ate fruit and vegetables less than twice a day were 6.5 per cent more likely to do so.’

So reading was the single factor that contributed towards maintaining mental acuity. There you are. Go out, buy books, keep mentally active. And support writers. I do!

The World in all its Absurdity …

The internet is wonderful in that it brings you the world in all its absurdity. There’s this site called Overclockers.com.au, each week they collect bizarre photos. Here are two from this week’s collection.

They must have used magnetic scrabble.

And wouldn’t you know it, the bridge was too low. Typical.

I’m always looking for weird obscure things about people, plants and animals. The world’s a fascinating place.
